Secondhand Prophets is a red dirt, white knuckle, blue collar, musical experience out of Abilene, Texas. Playing years of music has forged a style and sound that is our own. A Secondhand Prophets blend of outlaw country, jazz, blues, and good ol' rock hits exceptionally hard in this group. We’re loaded with original music and we carefully pick our covers to put our brand on. SHP brings both barrels, all at once. Great studio cuts, raw live energy, and our lyrics all punch you in the gut! Needless to say, you haven't seen anything yet!
The “Preacher” is what most people know him as. He takes pride in his music, his faith, and his family. Derek has always enjoyed rocking out on stage Saturday nights and bringing the worship home at church on Sunday mornings. His parents gave him his first drum set at the age of four and he taught himself to be the rhythm. At the age of 8 he picked up one of his dad’s guitars and began teaching himself to play. By 9, he was playing in his dad’s band and at 13 he was singing in church. For the last ten years he has been the lead singer and guitarist for Secondhand Prophets.
Crank up the volume and gain to 10 and let it rip! That how you describe Bill Griffin’s improvisational guitar style. In his words “It’s all in the emotional context and control. Some players are note for note spot on. Myself, it’s all from the heart, some may call that undisciplined I call it authentic. It’s me”. Bill discovered an old Gibson acoustic in a closet when he was a kid and was told to never touch it….the obsession started there. Disappointed by several failed attempts at bands in the Abilene area, he packed away the music dreams. Years later, he met Bruce Beardslee in the Washington DC area, the fire was rekindled with a project called 100 Watts of Hope. The project gathered a small local following until real life set in and moved Bill back to Abilene. Fast forward a few years a Craigslist ad resulted in Hellfire and Whiskey, followed by The JP Brewing Company. Not long after these projects and 20 West morphed into Secondhand Prophets. It’s been history since….
Songwriter, Musician, Wordsmith. A creator of music that speaks to the heart. Come, let's explore this musical world together. “Saturday morning cartoons and dad’s vinyl. That's where my love of music started.” It wasn't till eight years later when Doc got his first guitar. His biggest influence was his older cousin. He taught him to play and even convinced Doc to play bass. “I went through a country phase, then blues, then a rock phase.” Doc found that his love for creativity needed a better outlet. Song writing has always allowed him to be his most creative self. “All my Saturday morning vinyl and years of country, blues, and rock bass playing have built me into the musician I am today.” Along with those experiences, life has given him ample material to draw from when he writes. “I tell people I was born a musician, but I got a late start.” #songwriter #musician #wordsmith
Jimmy was exposed to music, live music, and band life before he could walk. His father is an amazing, successful, accordion player who played in multiple Tejano bands across Texas in the 70’s, 80’s, and 90’s. He had his first accordion at 3, his first “guitar” at 5 and first actual electric guitar at 13. He was SURROUNDED by family members who were all gifted, musically. There were guitarist, bassists, drummers, singers, pianist, and everything in between. He was listening to Tejano music on the weekends at his dad’s shows, and then listening to classic rock with him during the week. Jimmy played with local middle school/high school friends at school, their houses, their dad’s muffler shops, wherever they could setup and play. When he got to college, he joined his first band, playing bass for a fast, loud, band called Nothing Hour. Shortly after he joined Siren, a female fronted band with screams, sings, and a nu-metal sound. Years went by and circled back to high school friends, coming back together to form a very melodic three piece called Survive, Kaleidoscope where he was now drumming. Life continued on and Jimmy continued his life behind the kit and joined his current band, Parkside, out of Abilene. This band thrived, starting in 2020 during a pandemic. Secondhand Prophets is a new project for Jimmy as the newest member and he hopes to add his energy to the musical fusion happening within this group of men. “Music is a gift. Music is a way for people to heal. Music is a time machine that will take you to another time in your life. I’d lose my shit without music in my life.”
